1. What is a reflective insulating material?
It's a thin layer covered on both sides by a low emission aluminium film
2. How does it works?
It can reflect the heat that it irradiated through the walls and roof of a building.
3. How is it fixed?
With a batten or planking to create a 2 cm cavity from the wall. Because it is a semi rigid roll it is easy to cut and shape without loose ends associated with other products. It can be fixed by one person with the minimum of specialist tools.
4. Why do I have to leave a gap?
Reflection is possible only through empty space or air. An air chamber is necessary to avoid the opposite effect of heat conduction.
5. How can I assess your product's performance?
It is assessed through thermal resistance in the insulation system (the product and two air chambers). Another important characteristic is emissivity, which is the surface's ability to release radiant energy. The lower the emissivity is, the higher the reflecting power. It has many independent test certificates including the National Physical Laboratory. The certification includes heat transference, fire and sound results.
6. How can I compare your performance with other products'?
Through thermal resistence: in mass insulating material it is the s/ ratio. In this case it was measured through a hot slab. The product has many independent test certificates including the National Physical Laboratory. The certification includes heat transference, fire and sound results.
7. What thickness of traditional material corresponds to your standard?
Considering the average conductivity in fibrous material (0,04 W/mK), our product corresponds to approssimately 6 cms.
8. Are aluminium and polyethylene toxic?
Both of them are non-toxic, and they are also employed in the food industry. No adhesive is employed in the manufacturing process.
9. If I place two different layers of your material, will the insulating effect double?
Our material operates by reflection, so the thickness is not relevant. All that is necessary is to create an air gap close to the aluminium layer. To put more layers would be not improve performance.
10. I know aluminium can reflect the light, but how can it possibly work on the inner skin of a wall, where there is no direct lighting?
In the inner gap of a wall there is no direct lighting but there is heat, which is spread through convection and irradiation. Convection is limited because the air gap between the wall and the reflecting insulating material is quite thin.
11. Why do I need an aluminium tape?
The aluminium tape provides a continuous surface in the junction of two adjacent sheets, in order to avoid thermal or acoustic gap.
12. Am I likely to have trouble with mobile phone reception if I use your material?
The aluminiun we use is very thin; it cannot block the electromagnetic waves that allow phone reception. In addition, the way our material is laid doesn't allow the charge to accumulate, so the electrical system can operate normally.
13. How much can I save using your material instead of another?
It depends on the building's characteristics. We tried it on a 200 sqm house, and all the papers related are available for download from our website(see downloads).
14. It is likely to have condensation?
Aluminium is laid on both sides of the insulation material, so that it blocks the formation of steam. This can be judged either in a positive or negative way. Anyway the extent of transpiration of a brick structure is about 3 to 5%. The permeability of the insulating material is not relevant because some change of air is necessary in order to get as suitable lever of moisture and comfort.
15. Does your product have Fire certification?
Our material is certified as CLASS 1. We have independent test results which can be downloaded from ourwebsite (see downloads).
16.Do I need to install a waterproof membrane in addition to your insulation?
Aluminium is 100% waterproof. In many parts of Europe the insulation is used as the waterproofing. We would suggest that you need to check with your local building control.
17. Can I use your product with floor heating?
We supply THERMOLIVING 3B, which is ideal for floor heating, it also resists compression. The insulation is installed under the heating tube so as to reflect the heat it produces.
18. What do I need to install your product?
Installing the flooring product, THERMOLIVING3B, it is necessary to have stripes that must be installed along the perimeter walls and air bubbled polyethylene tape to joint the sheets.Installing the wall and roof insulations,ISOLIVING and ALUMTECH,need battens to create an air gap of approximately 2 cms. These can be wood or biadhesive expanded PE foam, which we will supply. You also need aluminium tape to seal the joints.
19. Can your product protect us from radon?
Radon is a radioactive, carcinogenic gas emitted by the soil, especially in volcanic areas. Installing THERMOLIVING3B under the floor blocks radon and provides protection from its effects.
20.Where can your product be purchased?
Our items are available at our head office and authorized distributors. Contacting us is easy, by phone, e-mail or using the PREVENTIVES link on our web-site.
21. Does the product conform to current legislation?
The products have independently tested by numerous laboratories for heat transmission, fire transference and sound deadening properties. The laboratories include the National Physical Laboratory who is UKAS approved. The product has been used on many prestigious projects throghout Europe and the UK. Copies of the certification can be obtained from our website or by phone. Our technical department will advise on any specific or unusual requirements.
